Title: Teng-Yun Train

Materials: High-density Styrofoam and composite material Creator: Hsieh Chia Heng About the creator: Master’s degree in Pottery from the College of Arts, University of Madrid, Spain Introduction to the work: In 1887, Taiwan governor Liu Ming-chuan constructed the railway for the military demand and hired the engineers from Great Britain and Germany to establish the first railway of Taiwan. “Teng-Yun Train” was the industrial train introduced from Germany to repair the railway and it was the first steam train in Taiwan in early times. In 1895, although it only accomplished the sections from Keelung, Taipei to Hsinchu, the following generations still recognize the hard work of the period of construction. Mechanical structure of the origin of steam railway in Taiwan, Teng-Yun Train, was simple. However, it was significant at the time. During the period of Japanese occupation, it established the solid base of railway system in Taiwan. In 1908, western line of railway was accomplished and it launched the rapid connection between northern and southern Taiwan. In 1940s, railways of sugar train were extended to more than 3000 km in Changhua and Jianan Plain. It was the peak period of sugar industry in Taiwan. With the railway development, Taiwan was transformed from agricultural society to modern industrial civilization. Each steam train was imported in Taiwan from different countries and they accomplished the tasks according to the transport demand of various sections. They enhance the industrial civilization and modernity of Taiwan. Besides, the affection and memory of railway will continue with the sound of whistle of the train! Rukai people respect the trees and they show the faith in the spirituality of the trees. Introduction to the work: The girl is the painter who enjoys traveling. In the trip, she records the unforgettable scenes by paint brushes which will launch the journal of happiness. The boy is the fan of railway who travels by train. He sees the charming scenery of ponds of Fugang and experiences the history and culture of the old street. |
Title: Fu Gung Scenery

Materials: graffiti and steel plate Creator: Euglena Program of Art About the creator: Euglena is a kind of unicellular creature and it is the only life on Earth with both physical characteristics of plant and animal. Some said that it is the origin of all creatures. In 2010, two creators, Lama Motis and Jiao Sheng-wei, created the project Euglena. They intended to explore the origin of life and various incredible and extended forms of life. In the project of Euglena, two creators probed into the image of Taiwan by diverse creation process and the biological imagination. Introduction to the work: “Fugang Landscape: Story of Time” was constructed in the building of warehouse of Farmers’ Association around Fugang train station to show local stories of Fugang by installation and painting with different materials and presentation. The themes include ecology of Fugang, agricultural landscape, local scenery, local food, cultural stories, etc. They show the fragments of the past lives of Fugang. Thus, the public approach the history by local stories. The town which used to be prosperous with different industries might decline due to the industrial change, Fugang old street might be less popular; however, the history and human traces are still unforgettable. |

Materials: weather-resistant steel plate, stainless steel, GRC, LED Creator: Lin Shuen-Long About the creator: graduated from Department of Arts in University of Japan in 1986, studied fresco research in Graduate Institute of Fine Arts of University of Tokyo and applied design concept to large public art space. In 1991, the creator studied in École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris for one year and obtained the residential identity as artist. After returning to Taiwan in 1996, the creator taught in several schools and was devoted to public art. Introduction to the work : rice wave, pond, canal, train, camellia, mountain of Earth God are the essential elements of Fugang life; use the land and resources of environment is the characteristic of Hakka people’s lives; when they are not busy at rural work, they drink tea and chat with each other beside Earth God temple under the banyan. Women share the work, such as grinding and preparing the rice, cooking steamed cake and Niu Wen Shui. It resulted in the special culture in Fugang: “Under the banyan, beside the pond, short bridge, running stream, an interesting world of fun and frolic”; rich and simple affection of Hakka “in the houses, Hakka affection” in the neighborhood. |

Materials: Metal, drift wood Creator: Lin Shuen-Long About the creator: graduated from Department of Arts in University of Japan in 1986, studied fresco research in Graduate Institute of Fine Arts of University of Tokyo and applied design concept to large public art space. In 1991, the creator studied in École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris for one year and obtained the residential identity as artist. After returning to Taiwan in 1996, the creator taught in several schools and was devoted to public art. Introduction to the work: based on Egret in the fields; it is the extension of stainless steel strips on the wall of Min Fu Road; with environmental materials, it creates the work of Egret on the ground and shows family affection by parents-children image. Beak and feet are the materials of metal and the body is made of drift wood with the color of Bubulcus ibis which means the landscape of Fugang; wasted natural materials are reconstructed with strong visual effect which encourages the public to reflect on the environmental issues. |

Materials: 316 Stainless steel forged mirror Creator: Jian Shen-Min About the creator: in 2001, the creator was selected as the representative of Taiwan in outdoor sculpture camp of Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium, present executive and selection member of public art and visual art of Ministry of Culture and director of Pulin Art International Co., Ltd. Introduction to the work: common running, soccer, in-line skates and baseball and the totems of parents-children game and leisure activities are carved on stainless steel ring; by the featured elements of Fugang such as old street, ploughed field and steam train, it conveys the concept of national health of the sports park and suggests that the most important factor of life is “health”. Stainless steel carving increases from bottom to top which shows hard and soft characteristics. The modeling 0 means there are no scores. Sports are for physical and mental health instead of competition and ranking. With health, life can be complete as a ring. |
Title: Reaping the Rewards

Materials: marble, 2mm stainless steel, wool silk, etching characters Creator: Chen Li-shin About the creator: graduated from Department of Sculpture, National Taiwan University of Arts and master of Art Creation of Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, Tainan National University of the Arts in 2001. When the creator was the student, she (he) was the first in Art Exhibition of Taipei City and Sculpture of Art Exhibition of Tainan. In 1999, he (she) was the representative of outdoor sculpture camp of Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium; present art director of Pulin Art International Co., Ltd. Introduction to the work: Taoyuan was the city of rice in Taiwan. Based on rice bag of rural families and Hakka cloth wrapper, it implies the “harvest”, full as the rice bag, of the commuters of Fugang after work and school. Two sets of stone sculpture reveal the fullness of rice bag and wrapper. The tension of the tied mouth of the wrapper is the most interesting visual spot of the work. Body of the wrapper is soft and smooth which encourages the audiences to sit, climb and touch. |

Materials: weather-resistant steel, aluminum alloy, baking finish, weather-resistant paint Creator: Pan Yuyo About the creator: from 2007, the creator attempted to extend the 2-dimenstional painting to 3-dimensional space. In the exhibition places or the passages, he (she) created the amazing surprise. The creator cooperated with the schools, guided the students to observe living environment and create wall painting to show local environment. Introduction to the work: Fugang development is associated with railway and train is connected with the evolution and daily lives of Fugang. By the concept of memory train, it triggers daily life by locomotives, presents living situations and religion of people in Fugang and interprets the multiple meanings of “taking”. The work is installed on the wall at the back door of Fugang elementary school. By childish style, it transforms the market in the morning, selection of castrated chickens in Tai Xiang Temple, Hakka rice balls which resemble the reunion and pig competition of Chi Yi Temple into trains to revive the life of Fugang! |

Materials: SUS304 stainless steel Creator: Hsu Tsung-Chieh About the creator: Graduated from Department of Theatrical Design and Technology of National College of Arts in 1999; “Face of Time”, the second place of public art project of Bei-hu Branch, National Taiwan University Hospital in 2016; “World of the Future”, the first place and installation in Kaohsiung Exhibition Center of 2017. Introduction to the work: based on digital 3D low-poly, it creates a large-scale installation work with the height of 8.5 m upon stainless steel structure. The appearance resembles Egret, living in the habitat, walking elegantly, lowering the head and searching for food. By the reflection of water in the unique ponds of Fugang, the work is naturally combined in the landscape of fields. |
